Abstract:

This subject is designed to introduce students to the historical, pedagogical, and theological foundations for Religious Education and Family Life Education programs in the publicly funded Catholic schools of Ontario. The course also explores the principles of moral and faith development, Catholic teaching on Social Justice, Hebrew and Christian Scripture, and the prayer and sacramental life of the Church.

Enrolment restrictions:

Must be enrolled in the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies in Ontario.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to articulate their personal philosophy of Catholic education through the use of a portfolio;
* be able to articulate the challenges facing Catholic education in Ontario;
* have reflected on their practicum experience in Catholic schools and consider changes in their teaching practice;
* have a working knowledge of the catechetical program published by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, Born of the Spirit: Grades 1- 6 and the Fully Alive Family Life program published by the Ontario Conference of Catholic Bishops;
* be able identify expectations of the Ontario curriculum which are addressed in the Religious and Family Life program;
* be able to integrate Religious and Family Life Education into individual lesson and unit plans based on knowledge of child development, principles of integration, and components of effective planning;
* be able to understand how the principles of assessment and evaluation may be applied to Religious and Family Life Education;
* be able to implement a variety of instructional and assessment strategies to enhance learning in Religious and Family Life Education and meet a range of student needs;
* be able to demonstrate the ability to facilitate classroom prayer; and
* be able to understand the role of the teacher in preparing students to receive the sacraments.
