Abstract:

This subject focuses on the knowledge and skills required for early childhood educators to develop collaborative partnerships with families that are inclusive and allow for consultation and agreement on care practices, with the view that these partnerships are fundamental to the care of the child. It also explores the development of policies, practices and resources that support inclusiveness, diversity and respect for diversity within an early childhood setting for both educators and children. Strategies for developing policies and practices for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families in children’s services will be considered.

Enrolment restrictions:

Prior to enrolment students must have completed the Certificate III Children’s Services AND Stage One of the Diploma of Children’s Services (AQF 5) through TAFE Western and Riverina Institute.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to review and support the development of inclusive philosophies, policies and practices;
be able to demonstrate inclusive practices;
be able to review and select inclusive resources;
be able to promote respect for diversity among children;
be able to promote respect for diversity among families;
be able to consult family members about the child and the child's needs;
be able to reach agreement with family members about care practices;
be able to communicate with families about incidents and care strategies;
be able to respond to a family member's concerns about a child; and,
be able to provide opportunities for family members to participate in the service.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Exploring and discussing contemporary literature in regard to inclusive philosophies, policies and practices, including the Principles, Practice and Learning Outcomes of the Early Years Learning Framework
Reviewing educator language, interactions, attitudes and service resources that may convey bias
Planning and implementing programs, and constructing environments that reflect inclusive principles, and that support children who may have experienced exclusion
Providing information to others including co-workers about inclusive principles
Exploring issues faced by families from diverse cultural backgrounds when attending an early childhood service, including access, equity and human rights considerations
Recognising and exploring the particular issues faced by many Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and refugee families
Developing a non-judgemental awareness of cultural practices including child-rearing and the impact on child care delivery
Developing an awareness of the need for, and techniques by which to communicate, consult and collaborate with family members on those practices
Understanding the need to respect the parents' strengths, competence and knowledge of their child
Promoting the importance of parenting and facilitating parent support networks
Facilitating opportunities for family members to both participate in and offer feedback on the programs of the early childhood service
Developing and implementing communication strategies that support both the provision of information to families about the child, and the respectful receiving of information from families
Determining and developing appropriate follow-ups to concerns expressed by parents regarding their child
