Abstract:

The relationships between schools and the communities they serve are complex. This subject explores the theory relating to community involvement, participation and control of schooling as it is manifested in Australia and overseas. Within this theoretical framework schools must address the practical questions of how to maximise the effectiveness of the community's contribution to the school and the school's to the community.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be aware of key issues in the relationships between schools and their communities in the contemporary world and able to utilise a comparative perspective in examining educational issues;
- have acquired skills to study and react to the educational situations in which their schools operate by devising programs which will provide for an interaction between school and community;
- be able to examine pressures at the local, state and national levels and determine to what extent the school can be accountable to those that it serves.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Schools and their communities, primary socialisation, the culture of the home and culture of the school, compensatory' programs. - Community study: techniques of community study, implications of community diversity for educational decision making. - Curriculum and community; processes by which the community can participate in curriculum development, community school resources community based programs accountability.
