Abstract:

This subject is designed for beginning students enrolled in the BEd Primary program. This subject acknowledges the changes that students undergo as they make the transition to University study, and the subject provides students with a range of scaffolded learning experiences that will make this process more effective. The subject introduces students to University expectations and support services in relation to literacy, information seeking skills, teaching and learning, assessment and academic help. The subject also prepares students for the profession by orienting them towards professional attitudes and behaviours including collaborative skills, acceptance of diversity and inclusion, and the development of interpersonal skills.

Available to student in the Bachelor of Education (Primary) course.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be aware of the issues surrounding the transition and adjustment to university life;
actively participate in individual and small group activities to facilitate the development of a community of learners;
develop, through simulated practice tasks, a repertoire of communication skills including written, oral and digital which will assist them in their studies;
develop knowledge of specific educational and personal services and resources available to them as they adjust to study at unversity;
develop confidence in interpersonal skills through peer interaction, and providing and receiving feedback;
develop an appreciation of the importance of the principles of inclusion and respect for diversity in education; and
begin to be aware of the principles and practices that characterise the teaching profession.
