Abstract:
This subject provides an overview of a range of observation, documentation and assessment practices used in early childhood and primary school settings to develop students' skills in recording and interpreting children's interactions, learning and development. Students are helped to become critically aware of the usefulness of different methods and approaches for recording information and planning. Issues specific to Indigenous Australian education are included in this subject. A case study approach will be taken.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
-Understand how theoretical frameworks have influenced observation, documentation and assessment practices
-Understand the purpose of observation/documentation and appreciate how records are used over time to provide the 'story' of children's learning
-Be able to use a variety of different types of observation, documentation and assessment tools to understand, interpret and evaluate children's learning and development in early childhood and primary school settings
-Be able to interpret observational records and other information/documentation that they gather/generate, drawing on various theoretical perspectives.
-have developed skills in communicating with families, teachers and children as part of the process of observation/documentation of children's learning and development
-Be aware of the critiques and debates around observation, documentation and assessment practices in early childhood and primary school settings
-Be aware of the significance of transitions for children and families
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
-Diverse ways of knowing the child, their interactions, development and learning -The purpose of observation, documentation and assessment in early childhood settings and primary schools -An overview of observation, documentation, assessment and evaluation practices in early childhood and primary school settings, -Methods and types of observation, documentation, assessment and evaluation and how these link with concepts of childhood and theoretical frameworks -Introduction to observation, documentation, and assessment and developing observational skills such as running records, anecdotes, developmental checklists, criterion based assessment, learning stories, journals, children's self assessment, portfolios, photographs, video, and transcripts of conversations -Interpretation of information gathered about the child through observation, documentation and assessment using a variety of theoretical frameworks -Reflecting on the information contained in observations taken in light of text/readings -Systems for recording children's learning and development in the context of services and schools -Communicating with families, teachers and children as part of the process of observation and documentation -Current critiques and debates around transition, observation, documentation and assessment in early childhood and primary school settings -Ethical issues of observation, documentation and assessment Personal journey through childhood - retrospective case study of self
