Abstract:

This subject focuses on the understanding required to define experiences, the environment and resources that enhance children’s play and learning.

Emphasis is given to the development of skills and knowledge specific to organising contexts for learning through which children can organise and make sense of their social world.

This learning is then applied to the active engagement of children with people, objects and representations.

Enrolment restrictions:

Prior to enrolment students must have completed the Certificate III Children’s Services AND Stage One of the Diploma of Children’s Services (AQF 5) through TAFE Western and Riverina Institute.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be aware of children's developmental stages applicable to the specific age group and what this means for appropriate resource and material selection;
be able to use strategies to vary experience depending on child's age, abilities, development, culture and need;
be able to articulate the influence of observation and interpretation of children's behaviour on program planning;
be able to apply effective methods of planning for, providing and reviewing a range of experiences and opportunities which stimulate children's individual development;
be able to demonstrate effective application of skills and knowledge to provide a range of experiences to stimulate children and aid their development;
be able to articulate the relationship between organisation standards, policies and procedures and program planning; and,
be able to demonstrate the relevance of the work role and functions to maintaining sustainability of the workplace, including environmental, economic, workforce and social sustainability.

The subject will cover the following topics:

Exploring the explicit pedagogical strategies in establishing an environment that fosters children's development
Understanding the value of the provision of creative and challenging opportunities which stimulate learning and development of the child
Exploring the role of a pedagogical leader in the provision of creative and challenging opportunities which stimulate learning and development of the child
How the application of skills and knowledge of children's development and identity will impact the planning, implementing and evaluating of experiences for children
What is the pedagogical leader's role in encouraging children's involvement in experiences
