Abstract:
Assessment and reporting are significant aspects of school education across K-12. Educational achievement and reporting of this is crucial to ongoing success for learners. Assessment monitors learning progress and reporting makes the results available to a range of audiences. Understanding the complexities surrounding assessment and reporting is essential for effective teaching. This subject compares and contrasts assessment and reporting strategies relevant to school education. Skills and practices required for effetive assessing and reporting are explored with specific attention to identifying and understanding the challenges and complexities encountered by teachers when assessing and reporting on academic performance, particularly in the context of national curriculum and assessment.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- understand the social and political trends which inform assessment practices;
- be able to examine, utilise and critique a range of strategies to assess student achievement;
- have engaged in critical enquiry and dialogue about reporting and assessment as it relates to teachers, parents, caregivers and students;
- have engaged in critical enquiry and dialogue about assessment and reporting and its role in improving student learning;
- have identified the strengths and limitations of a range of assessment strategies;
- have understood the links between outcomes and assessment strategies;
- have examined and understood assessment strategies appropriate for a range of learners across several stages of schooling;
- understand how assessment for learning impacts on pedagogical practices; and,
- have examined and understood the national assessment program.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- perspectives on assessment and reporting;
- assessment for learning
- assessment items appropriate for a range of learners at a range of stages;
- philosophical challenges of assessment and reporting
- models of reporting and assessing;
- an examination of K-12 Curriculum Frameworks for various KLAs, expected learning outcomes and approaches to assessment;
- connection between learning outcomes and approaches to assessment in classroom practice;
- testing and measurement;
- national teaching; and,
- assessment and student involvement.
