Abstract:

This subject is part of a suite of professionally focussed subjects offered to student teachers in the final year of the course. It provides an introduction to the strategies of gathering information regarding educational and classroom practices to enable student teachers to experience the professional development of reflection on and improvement of their own classroom practice. This subject builds on the understanding of educational research and requires students to apply the practical research methodology of action research to solving educational questions in their own practice.

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and the Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Honours) programs or as determined by the course coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- understand the benefits gained from conducting educational research;
- understand the processes and requirements for the design of a rigorous classroom research study;
- be able to demonstrate their ability to consider and act in accordance with the ethical conduct of research;
- be able to plan and conduct a small scale research study on an approved area of education;
- be able to use library and internet tools in the conduct and presentation of a research project.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Understanding action research as a form of professional development. -Defining a broad research question for investigation during the Internship. -Collecting literature evidence about the process and effects of the change to be investigated. -Refining the research question. -Developing an action research project to implement and reflect upon to improve classroom practice. -Keeping a reflective learning journal. -Collecting evidence about the process and effects of the changes initiated as part of the research. -Making further changes in a continuing effort to improve practice. -Reflection on the outcomes of this research in terms of student learning outcomes and teacher professional development. -Preparing a research report suitable for public presentation.
