Abstract:

This subject offers CSU staff an introduction to learning and teaching at CSU. The particular focus is on the CSU context, its strategic directions, plans, systems and processes, its diverse student cohorts, and the professional development needs of its teaching and teaching support staff. Participants in this subject are required to critically reflect on their own practice and demonstrate a deep-level understanding of the unique needs of CSU students and how best to support their learning by integrating CSU plans, technologies, systems and processes into their practice.

Only available to CSU Academics enrolled in Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

Describe the characteristics and educational needs of the student cohorts they teach and identify appropriate learning outcomes and learning and teaching strategies;
Engage students in learning through the application of a range of CSU's educational technologies;
Design assessment activities and criteria in alignment with CSU assessment policies and the diverse CSU student cohort.;
Identify the conceptions of teaching underlying the CSU Subject Experience Survey and demonstrate how these are being applied to assure quality learning and teaching;
Demonstrate an understanding of CSU curriculum principles;
Collaborate with educational professional staff to enhance subject and course design.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

Understanding and supporting a diverse student intake (e.g., recent school leavers, mature-age students, first in family to go to University and LSES students, those entering CSU on the basis of TAFE admission, DE students, international and indigenous students);
Educational technologies and their integration into Learning and Teaching;
CSU vision and strategic directions (CSU assessment policies, standards for blended and flexible learning and practice-based education);
Evaluation of students' subjects and course experience;
Course-based approaches to designing the student learning experience (i.e., CSU Degree principles, First Year Principles, Practice-Based Education and Blended and Flexible Learning);
Indigenous Education and Cultural Competence and its integration into Learning and Teaching.
