Abstract:
This subject supports students to develop knowledge and skills to teach Australian Indigenous content to Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Students are expected to develop a repertoire of teaching strategies and the ability to justify what they are teaching and how they need to teach material in a culturally inclusive way.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Recognise the importance of teaching Australian Aboriginal Studies to the 21st century child.
- Develop knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Studies content and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of at least one topic area in teaching Indigenous Australian studies.
- Develop teaching competency with Aboriginal Studies methodology and pedagogy with a focus on how to teach and an understanding of what to teach.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Indigenous Australian cultures, contemporary issues and post-invasion history.
- Evaluate the impact of different types of culturalism (‘cultural whiteness’, biculturalism) on self and others
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
· knowledge of Indigenous Studies subject matter;
· how to teach Indigenous Studies and perspectives;
· how to incorporate Indigenous Australian perspectives into the curriculum;
· how to teach Indigenous and non-Indigenous children Indigenous Australian Studies;
· knowledge of Indigenous Australian cultures, contemporary issues and post-invasion history.
