Abstract:
Education is a political activity which is grounded in specific cultural contexts. Teachers need to be cognisant of the complexity of education in general and schooling in particular, given that schools exert considerable influence upon the students and adults who work and learn within them. This subject foregrounds a number of cultural issues which influence teachers, teaching and student learning. This includes broad cultural issues in education in general, such as issues relating to gender, class, rurality and indigeneity, amongst others. This material is complemented by more specific cultural and political issues relating to schools and schooling.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have read a range of interdisciplinary academic literature for understanding, and increase this understanding through assessment tasks and participation in workshops
- have participated in a flexibly-delivered learning environment
- be able to identify different ideological positions, political agendas and cultural practices and their role in shaping how education is practiced and experienced by teachers and students
- have engaged with theoretical concepts such as subjectivity, power, knowledge, and representation, and develop an understanding of how these concepts relate to educational identities and experiences
- have explored their own positionality as students, teachers, researchers and activists
- have imagined a new future for Australian education
