Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the nature and culture of educational research. It examines issues related to the selection of a researchable topic, and projects forward to consider research design and development to carry out the research project. It also canvasses critical perspectives on educational research and examines issues related to research ethics.

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) (Honours) and Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Honours) program or as determined by the Course Coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- gain insight into the nature and culture of educational research;
- be able to articulate researchable questions and the research designs to study those questions;
- be able to reflect on the nature of ontological and epistemological claims;
- explain the purpose and nature of a literature review and of theoretical frameworks that guide a study;
- develop an understanding of issues of sampling and research participants;
- develop skills to take critical perspectives on educational research;
- identify and analyse ethical issues that impact upon the conduct of educational research.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The nature of educational research. - The culture of educational research. - Sources of knowledge. - Applying systematic inquiry to education. - Looking for causes, looking for meanings. - Research problems, variables, and hypotheses. - Selection of a researchable topic. - Locating and reviewing the relevant literature. - Subjects, participants and sampling. - Role of theory and theoretical frameworks. - Research design- non-experimental, experimental, ethnographic, case study, phenomenological, evaluative and emancipatory research. - Critical perspectives on the research process. - Ethics and educational research.
