Abstract:
This subject provides students with opportunities to examine current issues in care and education of young children. International, national and local aspects of early childhood policy, practice and professionalism will be considered. Students will explore one issue in depth from research and/or their own practical experience. Issues such as social justice and equity, quality and related public policy are examined in an integrated approach. The role of educators as agents for change will be explored.

Enrolment restrictions:
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies or as approved by the Course Coordinator.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- review research into indicators of high quality services and programs for young children and their families;
- consider early childhood education in an international, national, provincial and local context (including urban, rural, aboriginal, francophone and remote contexts);
- critically analyze current government and legislative policies: local, provincial and federal;
- identify current issues for children, families, educators and communities drawing on research and their own practical experiences;
- explore the underlying values, understandings and contextual influences which impact on identified issues;
- identify common themes across a number of issues;
- identify appropriate professional publications to target for sharing knowledge and experiences; and
- value the contributions they can make as early childhood educators by communicating about issues related to societies responsibilities to provide the best start for our children.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- societal values and early childhood education - exploring the care education dichotomy - policy, practice and research - examining and critiquing policy - the profession of early childhood - identifying, deconstructing and exploring current issues: problem-based approaches, framing appropriate questions to guide enquiry - educators as researchers and advocates
