Abstract:
This subject is designed to engage students in critical analysis of research into professional practice, understanding how conceptualizations of professional practice are framed, on the one hand, by theoretical perspectives and, on the other, by methodological choices about the conduct of research as a knowledge-constituting practice.

This subject is available only to graduate students in the Doctor of Education program.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Demonstrate an understanding of diverse traditions, paradigms, approaches and methodological perspectives in research on practice, and how these relate to different theories of practice in general and specific fields of professional practice
- Demonstrate an ability to apply this understanding to professional practice in their own field and context.
- Produce publishable material which communicates these understandings and abilities in a critical essay on theory and research on professional practice in their own field and context
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Different views about, and contests over, the nature of practice and approaches to research on practice - Study of a variety of different approaches to research on practice leading students towards analyzing theoretical and research literature relevant to their own field of practice
