EHR101 Sociocultural Foundations of Human Movement (8)

Abstract:

This subject is designed to stimulate students' interests in the sociocultural aspects of sport and physical activity in modern Australian society and beyond. It will encourage students to critically examine the nature and role of sports and physical activity in our society. Central to this subject is the notion that sports are social constructions that are created, influenced and modified by human social agents or actors.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to examine their 'taken-for-granted' assumptions about the nature of sports;
- be able to use social theories to understand the role of sport and physical activity in society;
- be able to discuss the relationship between sports and other spheres of social life, such as gender, race/ethnicity, violence, religion, the media and politics;
- be able to discuss the significance of sport in child and adolescent development, providing recommendations for changes in youth sports;
- be able to synthesise and write up academic research on sport from a sociocultural perspective;
- be able to express ideas and communicate with others on a selected sociocultural topic in sport using computer based techniques.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Sociocultural theories in sport; - Sports and socialisation; - Gender and sports; - The sport-media relationship - Violence and aggression in sport; - Youth involvement in sport; - Race and ethnicity in sport; - Sport and religion; - Terrorism in sport; - Politics and the globalisation of sport; - Deviance in sport; - Sport and social class; - Sport in the 21st century.
