Abstract:

This subject prepares students to teach gymnastics in NSW Years K-10 school contexts. It invites students to reflect on the issues tied to teaching gymnastics in schools, including the issues of developing safe learning environments and the place of gymnastics in the lives of young people. Underpinned by an educational gymnastics approach, this subject focuses on the development engaging movement experiences, that are a vehicle for developing problem-solving and communication skills. Students will apply the NSW PDHPE syllabuses to devise educational learning experiences that develop school students' ability to adapt, transfer, improvise, refine, compose, perform and appraise movement in gymnastics.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to examine and apply the principles and approaches of educational gymnastics;
- be able to analyse and apply the NSW K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabuses to plan educational gymnastics learning experiences;
- be able to reflect on the issues tied to teaching gymnastics in schools, including issues of developing safe learning environments, the place and meanings of gymnastics in the lives of young people and the place of gymnastics within contemporary physical and health education;
- be able to incorporate gymnastics movement patterns and knowledge of composition into the learning experiences they offer students and into the composition and performance of gymnastic movement problems;
- be able to develop, plan and deliver safe, age-appropriate and inclusive educational gymnastics learning experiences;
- be able to apply the principles of educational gymnastics to devise learning that develops problem solving and communication skills;
- be able to apply the principles of educational gymnastics to devise learning that expands and develops school students' ability to adapt, transfer and improvise movement concepts and to refine, compose, perform and appraise movement in gymnastics contexts;
- be able to engage with and construct compositional and aesthetic criteria which are useful to assess, appraise and appreciate a gymnastics skill performance or the performance of a gymnastics sequence.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Rationales and pedagogical approaches for teaching gymnastics. - Principles and approaches of educational gymnastics. - The place of gymnastics within NSW K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabus documents. - Applying the NSW K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabuses to devise educational gymnastics learning experiences. - Current issues related to teaching gymnastics in Australian schools, with a particular focus on issues of developing safe learning environments and risk assessment, the place of gymnastics in young people's lives, and the place of gymnastics within contemporary physical and health education. - Designing learning in gymnastics that is safe, age-appropriate and inclusive. - Gymnastics movement patterns (including balancing, rotation, leaping, landing, height and flight), rhythmic gymnastics, and refining, performing, improvising and composing movement in gymnastics. - Approaches and criteria for assessing, appraising and appreciating movement in gymnastics.
