Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the profession of Health and Physical Education (HPE) teaching in K-12 school contexts. A focus is placed on students beginning to conceptualise themselves as a HPE professional. To achieve this, the subject is designed around three main areas of study: 1. the development of a broad and critical understanding of the HPE key learning area; 2. the exploration of the diverse backgrounds and experiences that young people bring to HPE learning contexts; and, 3. the development of academically informed teaching philosophies in the area of HPE.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to examine and critique the historical, sociocultural and political contexts that shape the profession, including analysing how particular discourses have shaped the HPE curriculum over time;
- be able to analyse different pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning in HPE;
- be able to investigate the diverse backgrounds and experiences that young people bring to HPE learning contexts;
- be able to explore the factors that shape their own philosophy of teaching in HPE;
- be able to compose academically informed positions and judgements on 'quality' and 'educational' teaching and learning in HPE.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The historical, sociocultural and political contexts that shape the HPE profession; - Discourses that have shaped the HPE curriculum over time; - Different pedagogical approaches for teaching and learning in HPE; - 'Quality' teaching and learning in HPE; - 'Educational' teaching and learning in HPE; - The diverse backgrounds and experiences that young people bring to HPE learning contexts; - The relationship between student identities (with respect to gender, sexuality, class and ethnicity) and the place and meaning of physical activity and health in their lives; - Factors that shape one's philosophy of teaching in HPE; - Composing academically informed positions and judgements on teaching and learning in HPE.
