EHR124 Movement Education and Dance (8)

Abstract:

This subject prepares students to teach dance in NSW K-10 school contexts. It provides opportunities for students to participate in, plan and deliver safe and age-appropriate movement experiences, considers dance in a variety of contexts and examines the different ways dance can contribute to life long participation in physical activity. Students will learn to adapt, transfer movement concepts and refine, perform, compose and evaluate dance movement. Finally, the subject models and helps students to analyse dance teaching methodologies which develop school students' creativity, motor skill and enjoyment of physical activity.

Enrolment restrictions:

Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) students Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)/Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) students and as approved by Course Co-ordinator

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to use the elements of dance and composition to create dance movement and learning experiences for school students;
- be able to develop their own movement improvisation skills and understandings of movement as a form of communication;
based on the previous two objectives;
- be able to plan learning experiences that enhance the ability of school students to adapt, transfer movement concepts and refine, perform, compose and evaluate movement in dance contexts;
- be able to use dance as a vehicle for devising problem solving tasks and communication based movement problems for school students;
- be able to link specific dance experiences with specific learning objectives from the K-6 and 7-10 PDHPE syllabuses;
- be able to articulate and implement classroom management principles and strategies which are specific to dance teaching;
- be able to discuss and debate the relevance of dance for young Australians and the place of dance within contemporary physical education.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Where does/might dance fit in the NSW K-6 and 7-10 syllabuses? - Introduction to dance styles and traditions; - Understanding, using and connecting the elements of dance and composition to the NSW K-6 and 7-10 syllabuses; - Creating, performing and evaluating dance movement; - Dance as art, communication and recreation; - Dance specific teaching strategies; - Safety and risk assessment in dance education contexts; - Age specific dance programming and evaluation.
