EHR125 Anatomy and Physiology for Health & Physical Education (8)

CSU Discipline Area: Exercise Science (EXSCI)

Duration: One session

Abstract:

This subject introduces the central topics in anatomy and physiology for health and physical education. The key elements include the structure and function of the organ systems in the human body. The portrayal and integration of the human biological systems will enable an appreciation and understanding in the design and delivery of these topics in the related regulatory board health and physical education syllabuses.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to define anatomy and physiology and describe the scope and historical developments;

- be able to map the components that contribute to the chemical and cellular basis of life and how these regulate integrated body function;

- be able to describe the anatomy and physiology of the musculoskeletal system;

- be able to portray the structure and function of the cardiorespiratory system in relation to homeostasis and human function;

- be able to define the structural organisation and the regulatory functions of the endocrine system and the nervous system;

- be able to outline the anatomy of the lymphatic system and describe the role this system plays in immune function;

- be able to list the anatomical structures and describe the functions of the digestive system and define the relationship with nutrition, metabolism and temperature regulation in the human body;

- be able to delineate the anatomy and physiology of the urinary system and the maintenance of water, electrolyte and acid-base balance;

- be able to circumscribe the anatomical and physiological functions of the reproductive system and human genetic structures;

- be able to design and implement topics in anatomy and physiology by applying information technologies to health and physical education pedagogy.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The levels of organisation of the human body - Support and Movement - Integration and Coordination of body systems - Mechanisms of Transport - Absorption and Excretion - Application of Anatomy & Physiology to health and physical education pedagogy
