Abstract:

This subject is designed to explore the human as a multifaceted organism. It will enable students to extend knowledge gained in foundation anatomy and apply it to practical human environments and situations. In this way it will give students necessary skills and knowledge needed in the use of particular techniques in evaluating human performance.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to utilise measurement techniques used to collect objective data in the functional anatomy field;
- be able to understand the functional linkage of anatomy to motion;
- be able to understand the changes that occur in movement patterns during the life span with reference to changes in functional anatomy;
- be able to understand the significance of body type to human performance;
- be able to understand the variations in individuals performing in team sports vs individual sports.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Anthropometrical methodology. - Body composition. - Proportionality. - Somatotype. - Posture analysis. - Functional anatomy of the athlete. - Body image. - Team vs individual sports. - Ethnicity, gender and performance. - Maturational issues and performance.
