Abstract:
This subject uses the NSW Stage 6 PDHPE Syllabus and the NSW Department of Education and Training Crossroads document as vehicles for the exploration of health issues that impact on the lives of young people, including stress and coping, risk taking and road injuries, substance abuse, sexuality, violence and body image. The subject encourages students to critique the support structures
and resources available to young people to assist in developing their health literacy and advocacy skills and promoting a positive sense of self for their future and that of their local and global community.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to critique the support structures and resources available to young people, to restore, maintain or improve their health status, and that of their local community;
- be able to critically analyse a health promotion program designed to promote the health of young people;
- be able to analyse policies and legislation that impact on the health of young people in terms of giving responsibility, encouraging participation and valuing their contribution;
- be able to argue the role of schools in developing health literacy in young people;
- be able to accurately engage with the NSW Stage 6 PDHPE syllabus and the NSW DET Crossroads document to devise stage-appropriate quality learning experiences for Stage 6 students that are inclusive, celebrate difference and diversity, advocate for social justice, promote health and a sense of future; and have relevance and meaning beyond the classroom;
- be able to develop personal advocacy strategies for supporting the health of young people.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Personal, community and governmental support structures, services and resources; - Health promotion programs for young people; - Policy and legislation: empowering young people; - The role of schools in developing health literacy; - Establishing quality learning environments for safe and inclusive pedagogy; - Developing health literacy skills; - Learning to be advocates of health for themselves and other young people.
