Abstract:

This subject explores the role and application of exercise prescription in the management of selected chronic health conditions. Emphasis is placed on examining the clinical pathophysiology associated with prevalent cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, and musculoskeletal disorders as well as pregnancy, along with their risk factors for secondary disease and their influence on exercise tolerance and functional status. Furthermore, fundamental concepts in exercise testing and programming to enhance physical health and functional capacity in persons with chronic health conditions are addressed. The action of selected pharmacological treatments and their effect on the exercise response are also examined.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

be able to:

- describe the pathophysiology and major clinical features associated with prevalent chronic health conditions;
- apply the concept of problem-orientated exercise management for patients with chronic health conditions;
- predict the influence of selected chronic health conditions on exercise tolerance, work capacity, and functional status;
- critique the effect of exercise management on exercise tolerance, work capacity, and functional status in selected chronic health conditions;
- apply exercise testing and prescription guidelines to exercise management in individuals with chronic health conditions;
- demonstrate an awareness of the action of selected pharmacological treatments and their effect on the exercise response in individuals with chronic health conditions.
