Abstract:

This subject focuses on extending and deepening student's knowledge and skills in the area of Secondary Visual Arts education already achieved in EMA 441. It develops greater understanding of the way in which school students progress from the mandatory outcomes experienced in Stages 3 & 4 in Visual Arts to the deeper understanding of outcomes in Stages 5 & 6. Emphasis is placed on developing programming and teaching strategies for Stages 5 & 6 Visual Arts.

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary), Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), or as determined by the course coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have a sound understanding of the K-12 continuum and scope in Visual Arts;
- critically engage with various aspects and perspectives underlying syllabus content;
- organise, adapt and present content in ways that meet the needs of learners, curricula and teaching environments;
- utilise accessible support links, at a local level (virtual and real); and,
- understand the effect of classroom management on student learning.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- K-12 continuum - Secondary pathways and sequential learning - Differences between Mandatory and Elective subjects in Visual Arts - Multi-literacies and the Visual Arts - Differences between Stages 4,5 and 6 - Preparing students to study Years 11 and 12 Visual Arts - Content, context and contemporary issues - ICT in the Visual Arts - Addressing integrated perspectives: Key competencies and cross curriculum content - Classroom management and issues peculiar to Years ll and 12 - Continuum connectedness and content: awareness of development in relation to standards and understanding post school options - Structuring quality and sequential learning experiences - Preliminary and HSC internal requirements - Preliminary and HSC external requirements.
