Abstract:
The main aim of this subject is to develop the students' understanding of the role the creative arts plays in providing a balanced education for children, especially as a means of communication and expression. Students will acquire knowledge, skills and develop appropriate strategies to effectively teach art, music, dance and drama curricula in Ontario schools. Students will consider their own experience with Arts, both personal and in their practicum schools, and how that may impact on their comfort level when teaching the Arts in their own classroom.

Enrolment restrictions:
Students enrolled in stream 3 of the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies for Ontario.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to develop an understanding of art, music, dance and drama through readings, class discussions and immersion in various arts activities (e.g., introduction to recorder, creation of artwork, various dance and drama activities);
* be able to develop an understanding of the expectations for the Arts as articulated in the Ontario Kindergarten Program and Arts Curriculum, Gr. 1-8;
* be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of how child development and brain research (e.g., multiple intelligences) applies to best practice in the Arts;
* be able to demonstrate an understanding of how students with a range of abilities and intelligences benefit from learning about the Arts, explore creativity and expression and use the Arts to make meaning;
* be able to understand the conceptual foundations and practical skills of the Arts across a variety of cultures;
* be able to develop and implement integrated learning experiences in the Arts and evaluate student learning.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Visual Arts * an understanding of the stages of children's development in the area of visual arts; * the development, implementation and evaluation of art programming; * the elements of design: colour, line, texture, shape, form, and space. 2 Music * an understanding of the stages of children's musical development; * the elements of music: pitch, beat, rhythm, melody, dynamics, tone, colour, texture, form (e.g., harmony, polyphony); * experiment, select, combine, order and improvise with sounds using musical concepts; * the use of music in a range of styles; * commonly understood symbols to represent and create works of music; * awareness of musical concepts by singing and playing, for example: * develop recognition and control of the speaking and singing voice * experience melodic and rhythmic ostinato patterns * experience metre * experience movement and rhythm. Dance * an understanding of the stages of children's development in the area of dance; * the elements of dance: space, shape, time (rhythm) and energy; * the elements of dance to communicate ideas, feelings and intent; * improvise, experiment, select, combine and order movement using dance concepts; * the use of dance concepts and elements in a range of styles and cultures. Drama * an understanding of the stages of children's development in the area of drama; * the elements of drama: character, suspense, conflict and structure; * the concepts of: role, focus, tension, symbol, reflection; * forms of drama: games, improvisation, movement, tableau, puppetry, playwriting, readers' theatre, storytelling; * drama strategies that can be used by the teacher.
