Abstract:

This subject, together with Play and Investigation as Curriculum (Science and Mathematics), is designed to provide students with an understanding of the role of play and investigation in the curriculum of both early childhood settings and primary schools. This subject introduces students to the theoretical bases of both play and investigation in curriculum and uses the development of early literacy to consolidate students' understandings of these important pedagogical concepts. Both play and investigation are presented as key pedagogical approaches for the development of young children's literacy competencies and concepts. The subject includes a focus on pedagogies for Indigenous Australian education.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- Understand the theoretical basis of play as an integral part of early childhood and primary curricula;
- Understand the theoretical basis of investigation as a foundation for early childhood and primary curricula;
- Be able to compare and contrast the impact of both play and investigation on early childhood and primary curricula;
- Have a critical understanding of language development theories;
- Have explored the social, cultural and family influences on the development of early language and literacy development;
- Be able to plan, implement and evaluate play situations and investigations in early literacy in both early childhood settings and primary schools;
- Be able to argue for the place of play and investigative approaches in young children's education in general and in literacy in particular.
- Have developed an awareness of behaviour guidance and management techniques.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Theories of play; -Confronting assumptions about play; -Theories of investigation; -Play and investigation as important pedagogical approaches in early childhood and primary settings; -The role of adults in children's play and investigation; -The social context of language and literacy development; -Critical appreciation of language development theories; -Exploration of quality children's literature and of a variety of literacy genres. -Planning, implementing and evaluating play and investigations in the literacy curriculum area; -Building the argument for play and investigation-based curricula in literacy.
