Abstract:

This subject prepares students to teach in the Key Learning Area of Human Society and Its Environment (NSW) and Studies of Society and Environment (Vic) in primary schools. The subject is concerned with developing broad and critical knowledge and understanding of the range of content related to this KLA, including recent theory and practice. The subject is designed to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the principles and practices of teaching and learning in this KLA.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of appropriate state curriculum documents including aims, objectives, outcomes, content, course requirements and key terms.
- be able to plan and evaluate a range of learning experiences and educational programs that address the diverse needs and interests of learners within the primary classroom;
- be able to understand and reflect upon the nature and role of this KLA in relation to current and emerging concepts of change and continuity, cultures, environments, social systems and structures.
- be able to implement a range of skills of acquiring information, using modes of enquiry processes and social and civic participation
-be able to demonstrate the place of this KLA in the continuum of learning from K-12, including particular understanding of the links between stages relevant to primary school aged children

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Introducing curriculum and assessment requirements for primary students within this Key Learning Area: models of planning and community engagement -Designing a series of learning experiences using knowledge of curriculum content and curriculum documents: the practicalities of implementing lessons -Developing skills required to demonstrate pedagogical competence in this KLA: critical reflection of teaching experiences -Exploring issues in differentiating curriculum to meet the diverse needs of learners; understanding students, classrooms and schools. -Identifying concepts involved with civics and citizenship; thinking globally and acting locally -Promoting the role and value of this KLA in the broader school curriculum through identifying and investigating personal, local, national and global concepts relating to change and continuity, cultures, environments, social systems and structures: taking action. -Introduction of education and research for indigenous issues: using inquiry processes
