Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the philosophies, theory and methodologies of Society and Environment, and to the range of syllabus documents in this area. Students learn to prepare experiential, inquiry based quality lessons in Society and Environment across Years 7-12.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- understand the history, philosophy and language of Society and Environment within the contemporary secondary curriculum;
- demonstrate a critical awareness of the range and sequence of syllabus documents in Society and Environment; and,
- demonstrate skills in planning, implementing and assessing Society and Environment lessons designed to teach the sorts of concepts, skills and values that contribute to quality learning outcomes.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- What is Society and Environment? - History and philosophy of the subject. - What is unique about Society and Environment in curriculum? *Inquiry and empowerment: the meta-language of the discipline - What is taught in Society and Environment in schools? - What are the key frames of Society and Environment syllabus documents? *What does the 7-12 continuum look like in Society and Environment? *Integrated Society and Environment v. disciplinary approaches *Understanding and critiquing Society and Environment syllabuses - What are the implications of working with content, skills and values/attitudes? *Content facts, concepts, generalizations. Higher order thinking *Values and Attitudes - importance, dealing with controversy, issues sustainability *Skills - links to teaching and learning - How is Society and Environment taught? *Outcomes and curriculum organization *Pedagogy *Assessment and reporting - Student-centred learning: *Planning a student-centred lesson: experiential and inquiry approaches *Productive pedagogies *Selecting, developing and evaluating resources *Evaluating lessons *Creating safe learning spaces
