Abstract:

The subject builds upon Curriculum Method 1: Society & Environment and incorporates an analysis of the major strands of Society and Environment. Students learn to program teaching and evaluation of units of work which draw upon principles of authentic pedagogy, and incorporate ICT.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- demonstrate the ability to program units of study across the disciplines and conceptual strands of Society and Environment;
- understand and be able to demonstrate the principles of assessment and evaluation appropriate to Society and Environment classrooms;
- be familiar with a wide range of learning management strategies appropriate to different student populations; and,
- demonstrate skills in teaching different lesson types including ICT strategies.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

How is pedagogy in a secondary school organised? - Meta-language: subject literacies. - Inquiry: Research-based teaching. - Managing group learning and learning strategies. - Utilising student diversity- differentiated instruction for different learners. - ICT and inquiry. What are the issues to be considered in the teaching of Society and Environment? - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. - Gender. - Language. - Global education. - Civics. Planning units of study: - Outcomes. - Planning for skills and content. - Values in the secondary school. - Implementing quality teaching practices in the Society and Environment classroom. - Program evaluation and reflective practice. Assessment in Society and Environment: - Reflective evaluation of Society and Environment programs. - HSC and exit qualifications.
