EMH450 Social Studies (8)

Abstract:

This subject is designed to provide students with the opportunity to engage in and reflect upon the teaching of social studies in the elementary classroom. It requires students to become familiar with the Ontario Curriculum for Social Studies, Grades 1-6, and to integrate this curriculum area within the wider curriculum of the elementary school. Students develop an understanding of the key social science concepts which include a strong emphasis on understanding community, citizenship, equity and social justice within an increasingly diverse and interdependent global society.

Enrolment restrictions:

Students enrolled in Stream 3 of the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies for Ontario.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

* be able to demonstrate an awareness of the aspects of society and the environment which are appropriate for exploration by primary/junior children and the ways in which this exploration may be organised and conducted;

* be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Ontario Social Studies curriculum document and how it may be implemented in the classroom;

* be able to demonstrate an understanding of the processes of inquiry and the ways in which these are developed in children through the implementation of a range of inquiry skills in their teaching practice;

* be able to demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and skills in Social Studies and use these as a basis for developing a position on what constitutes effective teaching and learning in Social Studies;

* be able to demonstrate the ability to research a social studies topic in depth and prepare an overview of a social studies unit that is based on the key learnings for Social Studies; incorporates curriculum expectations; and describes an authentic performance task and appropriate criteria for assessment.
