Abstract:

This subject focuses on the development of academic literacy and numeracy. The first strand addresses English as communication for participation in society, viewing and representing experiences, ideas and values. Recent theory and practice related to acquisition of reading, writing, talking and visual literacy is canvassed. The second strand addresses the nature and role of mathematics as a form of communication and thinking in describing and modelling patterns and relationships and as a means of interpreting the world.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  1. have an understanding of the role of English as a language of communication for participation in society, through reading, writing, talking, listening, speaking, viewing and representing experiences, ideas and values.
  2. have an understanding of recent theory and practice, related to acquisition of reading, writing, talking, listening and visual literacy.
  3. understand how English is manipulated to meet higher-order social, aesthetic and cultural literacy demands.
  4. have an understanding of the nature and role of Mathematics in describing and modelling patterns and relationships that can be generalised, as a means of interpreting the world.
  5. have built their knowledge and understandings of the mathematics discipline commensurate with their role as teacher education students.
  6. understand the nature and role of Mathematics as a form of communication and thinking.
  7. be able to gather, process, analyse and present information in oral and written form using standard Australian English.
  8. be able to apply and encode mathematical strategies appropriately and accurately when problem solving.
