EML303 Process Drama in Early Education (8)

Abstract:

This subject explores how process drama is used as a learning/teaching method with children in the preschool and primary school years. It examines the many forms that drama can take, appropriate teaching strategies for drama and how to plan for drama across the curriculum. The Creative Arts syllabus is used to inform practical drama experiences which are planned, taught and evaluated.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- demonstrate understanding about how preschool and primary school children learn through dramatic play, both spontaneous and structured;
- appreciate the effects of different social and cultural contexts on dramatic play;
- explain drama in education principles and methodology;
- demonstrate knowledge of the Drama strand in the Creative Arts syllabus;
- use a range of drama in education techniques with children in a primary school;
- demonstrate knowledge of a range of drama forms;
- plan, implement and evaluate drama lessons to meet specific educational objectives for primary school children.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Learning through dramatic play: representational thought; conceptual thought; language; communication and social skills; social and cultural influences. - Drama in education principles and methodology: -learning through the drama process - teaching and learning focus, -central concepts - role; focus; tension; symbol; reflection. - Drama techniques: teacher-in-role; mantle of the expert. - Forms of drama - improvisation; narrative forms; movement, mime and still image; scripted drama; puppetry. - Drama lesson planning and evaluation: building belief, management techniques, dramatic focus, problem solving and resolution.
