Abstract:
In this subject students will study the variety of home and community language practices experienced by children, including bilingual children. The acquisition of oral language and the conditions supporting emergent literacy are considered within diverse social and cultural contexts. The central role of parents, carergivers and educators in guiding language and emergent literacy through a variety of interactions with children is a special focus. The potential of literacy learning and language development throughout a play-based curriculum is explored.

Enrolment restrictions:
Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies or as approved by the Course Coordinator.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- demonstrate critical understanding of the following aspects of language and literacy learning in young children: language development; the functions of children's language; diversity in children's language experiences; effective adult - child interactions; strategies for promoting language and emergent literacy;
- demonstrate knowledge of and plan for emergent literacy based on children's interests and theoretical knowledge of early literacy development;
- understand and explain teaching strategies which facilitate the development of children's talk, thinking and emergent literacy;
- recognize and use spontaneous opportunities to enhance children's emergent skills in communication and literacy throughout the curriculum;and
- develop knowledge and understandings about the potential of a play based curriculum to promote children's language and literacy learning.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- socio-cultural, interactionist views of language learning - theories of language and literacy learning - language development in mono, bi and multilingual children - development of communication, reading, writing for young children - linguistic diversity - diverse home and community experiences - teaching strategies: working with families, creating environments, using interaction, scaffolding, recalling, documentation - language and literacy across the curriculum
