Abstract:
In this subject, students will have the opportunity to read widely in the field of children's literature, to read about children's literature and to explore ways of bringing children and books together.

Available only to students in the B Ed (Primary) and B Ed (Early Childhood) courses.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
have an awareness and understanding of:
- the need for literature to be an essential part of the curriculum,
- the wide range of genres and authors available in children's literature,
- the wide range of teaching support materials available,
- the essential elements within a literature-based classroom,
- how the teacher can develop a literary environment which will create and support avid, independent readers.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The need for quality literature for children. - The transactive nature of the reading process. - Current issues involved in the selection of texts for children. - The role of talk in a reader response classroom.
