Abstract:

The subject addresses the place of practitioner research in the TESOL classroom and its use in enabling practitioners to analyse and improve practice. Emphasis throughout the subject will be on exploring and applying specific qualitative approaches to classroom-based research in the context of developing critical perspectives to research publications in the field of second language education.

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Graduate Diploma of TESOL and Graduate Certificate in TESOL programs or as determined by the course coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have critically reviewed research publications in the field of second language education
- be able to describe a range of approaches to collaborative classroom practice and research
- have undertaken a collaborative research activity in ESL teaching and learning
- have undertaken qualitative analysis of research data
- have compiled and presented research findings in an appropriate form
- have communicated findings with colleagues and school community/ institution.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Research orientations in TESOL - Ethical considerations - Research practices and procedures - Interviews and interviewing - Representation and self-disclosure - Observing classroom interaction - Collaborative Action Research in the language classroom - Reporting and disseminating classroom based research
