Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the ideas, issues and practical considerations of classroom drama curriculum 7-12.
Students will develop an understanding of the elements of drama and the practices of making, performing and appreciating drama. They will explore a range of dramatic forms, performance styles, dramatic techniques and theatrical conventions.
Students will develop strategies to devise a range of learning opportunities to facilitate both individual and collaborative learning through making, performing and appreciating drama in a range of contexts.

Enrolment restrictions:
Entry into the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary), Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (Health and PE) or as determined by the course coordinator.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- identify and use the elements of drama as they are articulated in the K-12 curriculum;
- be able to facilitate individual and collaborative learning through making, performing and appreciating drama;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the techniques and theatrical conventions of a range of drama forms and performance styles including playbuilding;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between drama curriculum, theatre process and practice and drama classroom practice;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of current issues in 7-12 drama education;
- be able to plan, implement, assess and report on programs that achieve the outcomes of 7-12 drama syllabi
- be able to use a range of technologies to enhance their own learning;
- be able to explore the qualities and processes of authentic pedagogy;
- be able to develop facility with the drama curriculum metalanguage;
- use the language of educational drama with confidence and competence;
- implement safe classroom practices; and,
- elaborate the relationship between the philosophy and practice of educational drama theory.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- classroom drama curriculum practice - the philosophy, practice and pedagogy of Educational drama - safe practice in a practical classroom - the elements of drama - the practices of playbuilding - journaling the drama process - devising individual and collaborative learning opportunities - assessment for learning - drama making, performing and appreciating - planning rich tasks and inclusive practices - the continuum of learning in the K-12 curriculum - introducing the mandatory requirements of assessment and reporting in the Stage 5 and 6 syllabuses.
