Abstract:
This subject is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to become effective classroom practitioners in the teaching of literacy. There is an emphasis on the continuum of language literacy learning and the development of a community of learners. Being literate in today's society is incredibly complex, involving a range of speaking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and representing. This subject will enable students to focus on different processes of this complex task in a way that is manageable.

Enrolment restrictions:
Students enrolled in stream 3 of the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies for Ontario.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to synthesize and analyse a conceptual framework based on Freebody and Luke's Four Roles of the literacy learner;
* be able to understand the theoretical and practical nature of the literary processes;
* be able to demonstrate the ability to develop comprehensive and inclusive literacy environments.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1 What is literacy? 2 Planning and organizing a comprehensive literacy program 3 Comprehensive literacy focus: The reading process 4 Comprehensive literacy focus: Assessment using running records (observing, recording and analyzing reading behaviours, looking at print and selecting text. 5 Comprehensive literacy focus: The writing process 6 Comprehensive literacy focus: Writing process - The six elements 7 Phonological and phonemic awareness, spelling and word study 8 Promoting oral language, reading, writing through technology and media literacy 9 Using good guiding questions - higher order questioning and thinking in literacy instructions. 10 Assessment, evaluating and reporting 11 Comprehensive literacy programs...consolidating thinking.
