Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the pedagogy of languages other than English. Contexts for learning language from K-12 are addressed with pathways emphasising the early (K-4) and middle (5-12) years of schooling. An appreciation of the range of appropriate teaching/ learning strategies is developed and particular attention is devoted to the skills of lesson planning, the implementation of syllabus documents and appropriate forms of assessment and evaluation.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- identify major theories of language learning;
- understand the similarities and differences between first and subsequent language development;
- critically review the content and context of relevant language education syllabuses and how they are translated into classroom practice;
- plan lessons effectively;
- appreciate the nature and significance of the cognitive, affective and conative domains and their application in LOTE education;
- apply a range of effective teaching/ learning and assessment strategies for LOTE teaching;
- incorporate appropriate information literacy skills into their teaching of LOTE.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Theories of first and second language learning and their pedagogical realisations. - The content and context of relevant LOTE syllabuses, and how they are translated into classroom practice. - The development of skills in effectively planning lessons, including the assessment of student learning and the evaluation of classroom practice. - The cognitive, affective and conative domains and their application in LOTE education. - The range of effective teaching/ learning strategies for LOTE teaching and their application, and the diversity of secondary student backgrounds - The pedagogy of appropriate information literacy skills and their incorporation into the teaching of LOTE.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 2 day residential school.
The purpose is to examine curriculum documents and for students to be able to plan for learning.
