Abstract:
This subject addresses the practical aspects of teaching English to speakers of other languages including the place of ESL in Australian contexts and EFL in overseas contexts. The primary focus is on developing capability in the theory-based design of teaching and learning for ESL/EFL contexts. This subject connects English language teaching theory with English language teaching practice by focusing on learner needs analysis, resource appraisal, syllabus design, syllabus implementation, evaluation, and assessment.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to describe the roles of teachers and learners in ESL/EFL classrooms;
- be able to analyse major approaches, models and orientations to English language pedagogy and curriculum;
- be able to critique and evaluate English language teaching materials, resources, and assessment tools;
- be able to plan effective English language programs that reflect local contexts and the learners’ needs;
- be able to demonstrate knowledge of different methods and strategies for teaching ESL/EFL in their context; and,
- be able to describe and design effective ESL learner assessment and reporting strategies using appropriate tools.

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Roles of teachers and learners in the classroom
- Approaches to syllabus/curriculum design in English language teaching
- Locating, analysing, and appraising language teaching materials
- Analysing learner needs
