Abstract:
This subject aims to prepare students for teaching Health and Physical Education in elementary schools in Ontario, while placing the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum in its wider educational and social context. The subject will introduce students to the debates around the purposes and approaches to Health and Physical Education. It aims to place the Ontario Health and Physical Education Curriculum, Gr. 1-8, in its wider curriculum and social context. The subject will also connect general educational theories about learning Health and Physical Education. An emphasis of this course will be on providing students with practical ideas and tools for planning and implementing successful Health and Physical Education lessons for primary/junior classrooms.

Enrolment restrictions:
Students enrolled in stream 3 of the Bachelor of Primary Education Studies for Ontario.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to summarise and utilise the Ontario Curriculum Grades 1-8, Health and Physical Education and relevant expectations in the Ontario Kindergarten Program;
* be able to select from a range of teaching strategies and resources for presenting kindgarten, primary and junior health and physical education lessons;
* be able to demonstrate an understanding of safety factors that impact on health and physical education classes;
* have acquired an appreciation for the diverse social factors which impact on student learning in health and physical education;
* have a commitment to viewing teaching as an important, complex and demanding profession which is connected with the lives of children.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
1. Introduction to the Ontario Curriculum Gr. 1-8 Health and Physical Education. Candidates are asked to think about why we have physical education in schools and some of the ways in which we might increase its educational value and the enjoyment children derive from it. 2. Focus on the personal development and health components of the curriculum. In particular, candidates are asked to think about the kinds of growth and learning experiences they might offer children and their reasons for doing so. 3. Focus on developing resources and activities that match Ontario Curriculum expectations and develop assessment tools that will provide the basis for reporting on performance in Health and Physical Education. 4. Plan, execute and evaluate a progressive set of lessons in Health and Physical Education (in collaboration with Foundations II, practicum course).
