CSU Discipline Area: Curriculum Studies (CURIC)

Abstract:

This subject is designed to give students a deep understanding of science and technology. The subject is based on the notion of a knowledge-building community where students monitor and analyse their own learning in light of research literature and deficits in students' content knowledge. Class sessions are structured around a problem-based learning approach designed to address the content knowledge of science and technology.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- understand a selection of science and technology disciplinary knowledge in the context of the Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus;
- be able to use inquiry and problem-solving strategies to address content knowledge deficits;
- be able to demonstrate adequate skills in the use of simple apparatus and materials in science investigations;
- have begun to appreciate the role of science and technology in the primary curriculum;
- have developed an understanding of learning by analysing their own experiences in the subject;
- have begun to articulate a philosophy of teaching and learning in primary science and technology.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

-Science and Technology discipline knowledge in context. -The nature of inquiry science. -Problem-based learning. -Discussion of the role of science and technology in our society including equity issues, environmental issues and specific contexts such as rural schools. -Understanding of how students learn in science. -Demands of the NSW K-6 Science and Technology syllabus.
