EMS442 Curriculum Method 2: Science (8)

Abstract:

This subject examines the current aims of the secondary science courses with particular emphasis on the senior courses in Years 11 and 12. The relevance of curriculum resources associated with the teaching of each syllabus is analysed. It covers the development of skills in the selection, planning, implementation and evaluation of extended teaching programs and their associated lesson sequences based on learning outcomes from the curriculum documents. The relationship between the nature and philosophy of science and the science syllabuses is examined. Selection of appropriate assessment and evaluation strategies within a standards based framework that monitors student progress and the achievement of learning outcomes is addressed.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- The HSC, policies and procedures in Stage 6 science. - K-12 policy statements and implications for developing programs. - The Stage 6 science syllabuses, philosophy, structure and content. - Developing an extended program for teaching an appropriate science course. - Enquiry teaching and the roles of field and laboratory based practical activities. - Assessment and evaluation of students and programs and reporting strategies for Stage 6 senior science courses. - The history, philosophy and nature of science. - Conducting a situational analysis including recognising student diversity and gender issues as part of programming a course based on identified student needs in the senior school. - The pedagogy of basic literacy and appropriate information and communication technology skills, and their incorporation into the teaching of Science. - Relate teaching science to developing student understanding of environmental sustainability. - Selecting relevant computer hardware and software for teaching Stage 6 courses.
