Abstract:
This subject explores a range of approaches to Design and Technology education in years 7-12. It identifies the position of design and technology in the school curriculum and explores design and the design process as concepts and their role in teaching and learning. It assists students construct Design and Technology technology-specific lessons and program units of study that are challenging, engaging, and supportive of student learning. Students will be introduced to practical student-centred learning in Design and Technology education. Particular attention will be devoted to the implementation of relevant technology syllabi, authentic pedagogies and assessment for learning in the context of secondary technology education. Issues of safety, risk assessment in Design and Technology environments, resource management strategies are addressed.

Enrolment restrictions:
Entry into the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary), Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary), Bachelor of Education (TAS), Bachelor of Education (Health and PE) or as determined by the course coordinator.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- analyse the organisation of the curriculum, particularly in the Technology and Applied Studies area;
- understand the concepts of design and technology in an education context and the contestation that exists in their relative position in the curriculum;
- be aware of the key changes in learning and teaching associated with the introduction of Design and Technology;
- develop units of work and programs of study consistent with Design and Technology syllabi for students in years 7-12;
- demonstrate competence in assessment and evaluation as it relates to Design and Technology;
- possess a detailed knowledge of the specific ways in which students studying Technology and Design may be assessed; and,
- identify strategies for managing students and resources in a safe teaching and learning environment.

- A meaning for "Technology" and "Design" - Design and and its place in the curriculum - Teaching 7-12 Design and Technology specific curricula - Authentic pedagogy and assessment for learning - problem-solving and design - The role of Information and Communication Technologies in the Design and Technology syllabi - Lesson and program planning in Design and Technology - Assessment and reporting in Design and Technology - Classroom management and risk assessment in technology environments
