Abstract:

This subject explores a range of approaches to teaching a Technology and Applied Studies subject in the junior and senior secondary school (Years 7-12). It aims to assist pre-service teachers to construct lessons and units of study that are challenging, engaging, and supportive of student learning. Particular attention will be devoted to the implementation of relevant syllabus documents, quality teaching strategies and assessment for learning. Students will study the syllabus associated with their specific area of discipline.

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Technology and Applied Studies), Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) or as determined by the course coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have critically reviewed the function and place of the TAS discipline within the continuum of contemporary technology curricula;
- be able to demonstrate an understanding of the range of approaches to teaching and learning in TAS;
- be able to develop strategies for managing and supporting students in completing TASprojects;
- be able to construct lessons and units of study using a variety of materials, tools, and formats;
- be able to differentiate teaching and learning experiences for diverse student populations;
- be able to implement quality teaching and assessment for learning in the TAS context;
- have evaluated software and hardware resources appropriate for teaching TAS; and,
- have developed assessment tasks that will differentiate student learning according to the HSC performance bands for TAS.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Role of TAS teachers in secondary school settings. - Place of the TAS discipline within contemporary 7-12 technology curriculum. - Strategies for managing and supporting students in completing TAS projects. - Information literacy pedagogies and their incorporation into TAS. - Quality teaching strategies, and curriculum organisation appropriate for TAS, Years 7-12 - Differentiating TAS instruction for diverse learners. - Assessment for learning in appropriate Technology syllabus specialisation. - Evaluation of software and hardware resources appropriate for teaching TAS - HSC performance bands for TAS; - Technology and gender in TAS curriculum - Teaching for sustainability in TAS curriculum
