Abstract:
This subject introduces the concept of environmental impact assessment (EIA) and environmental auditing. The subject concentrates on the development of the environmental impact assessment process, Commonwealth and state based environmental planning and pollution laws and methodologies associated with impact prediction, environmental assessment and environmental auditing. There is a residential school associated with this subject, where students will be involved in a range of formative assessment tasks such as discussion sessions, presentations, group work, and field work. The subject contains a total estimated workload of 155 hours.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
Be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the historical development and current legislative requirements of environmental impact assessment and environmental; auditing in Australia;
- critically evaluate the methodology, readability and practical limitations of existing environmental impact statements (EIS);
- develop documentation for environmental impact assessment in line with state and commonwealth legislative requirements
- identify potential environmental impacts of proposed developments and develop mitigation measures.
- describe the needs for, and requirements of, an environmental audit
- demonstrate an understanding of the development of environmental management systems

- The history and development of EIA
- EIA under different legislation
- EIA content and the preparation of environmental impact Statements
- Determining impacts for the EIS
- The many faces of impact assessment
- Introduction and need for environmental auditing
- The audit process
- Environmental law and legislative requirements
- Environmental management systems
