Abstract:
This subject is an introduction to the timber workshop and includes opportunities to develop knowledge and workshop skills related to working with wood. A strong emphasis on OH&S is included in the subject. Students will consider how these skills and concepts relate to technology studies in the secondary school and develop student projects relevant to the appropriate syllabus using timber technology. Introductory teaching practices for the wood workshop will also be covered.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to competently use hand tools and power tools in a wood-based workshop;
- understand risk assessment and put into practice OH&S procedures in a wood-based workshop;
- be able to carry out basic emergency care and first aid;
- be able to explain the processes associated with timber technology projects and their relationship to the technology curriculum;
- have safely used the processes of designing and producing to complete a timber-based design project;
- be able to plan a teaching activity associated with a technology syllabus in the high school curriculum;
- be able to outline and demonstrate some introductory wood workshop teaching practices.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- i) 7 units of competency from the Certificate II in General Construction (BCG20203):
- Workplace Communications (BCGCM1004B - Conduct workplace communication);
- Measurements and calculations (BCGCM1005B - Carry out measurements and calculations);
- Plans and specifications (BCGCM2001B - Read and interpret plans and specifications);
- Construction materials (BCGCN2004B - Handle construction materials)
- Hand skills and operate equipment (BCGCM2005B - Use construction tools and equipment);
- OH&S in a workshop and building site. (BCGCM1001B - Follow OH&S policies and procedures);
- Basic construction projects (BCGVE1002B - Undertake a basic construction project).
- ii) Development of a student project relevant to the appropriate secondary technology syllabus
- The properties of various timbers and their uses;
- Occupational Health and Safety requirements as they relate to timber technology and the TAS classroom;
- Planning a teaching activity from a technology syllabus using timber technology, that incorporates OH&S, skill development and a knowledge of materials.
Residential School
This subject contains a compulsory 4 day residential school.
Students will undertake the practical workshop components of the nominated units of competency from the Certificate II General Construction.
Specialised Resources
The University does not provide specialised resources; however we use specialised resources in secondary schools, namely the Trade Centres in local schools. Students are expected to contribute towards consumables for projects they create and keep.
