EPT115 Professional Experience 1 (Primary): Introduction to the Profession (8)

Abstract:

This subject introduces students to the teaching profession, primary education specifically, and enables them to explore their suitability for teaching through observation and hands-on experiences. It explores classroom practice in terms of appropriate structuring of teaching-learning experiences. The subject encourages and scaffolds the preservice teacher to develop critical awareness of their professional needs in order to respond to the complex roles and responsibilities with which they will engage. This subject involves a 10 day placement in a school setting where preservice teachers will be required to undertake teaching small groups of students.

EML110 and EMM108

Enrolment restrictions:

Entry into the Bachelor of Education (Primary) and the Bachelor of Education (Primary) (Honours) programs or as determined by the course coordinator.

Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

- have determined their suitability for the teaching profession in relation to Graduate Teacher Standards as indicated in Professional Experience Assessment Profile
- have interrogated the public perception of the profession
- have explored what it means to be a learner
- demonstrate an understanding of the attributes and responsibilities of effective learners and teachers
- demonstrate an awareness of the skills of critical reflection as a feature of professional learning
- have successfully completed a 10 day school placement
- be able to articulate the links between Professional Experience and concurrent academic subjects
- demonstrate appropriate communication skills and basic skills in planning, teaching and evaluation.

Syllabus:

The subject will cover the following topics:

- Roles and expectations of ethical, professional teachers including issues related to ongoing planning - Public perception of the teaching profession as generated by multimedia images - Modes of learning in relation to others and themselves - Introduction to syllabi in KLA - Introduction to fundamentals of effective planning - Critical reflection and how will it assist teacher learning - Making connections within and between academic subjects - Mandatory Child Protection training - An outline of procedures for organising professional experience placements - Expectations of preservice teachers involved in professional experience placement, including interacting with a range of personnel working in schools, eg. STLA, Counsellors.
