Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the teaching profession. It enables students to explore their suitability for teaching through a 15 day placement consisting of observation of teaching and learning as well as limited opportunities to undertake supported teaching practice. The subject aims to offer students a realistic insight into modern teaching practice as well as opportunities to reflect on their understanding of teaching and their desire to join the profession.

Enrolment restrictions:
Restricted to students enrolled in the University Certificate in General Studies or the Bachelor of Educational Studies or by permission of the Course Coordinator.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
1. have developed their understanding of the profession through an investigation of the public perception and practical reality of teaching and educating.
2. have successfully completed a 15 day placement in an educational setting.
3. have demonstrated basic competency in developing relationships with teachers and students in classrooms.
4. be able to demonstrate a beginning level of competence in managing children in educational contexts.
5. be able to support children during simple learning experiences with direct guidance by a teacher.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Perception of the teaching profession and its effects on teachers and the social value of education.
- Mandatory Child Protection training
- Relationship development in educational settings.
- 15 day practicum.
- Professional practice in the modern classroom - issues, demands, and personal challenges.
