Abstract:
This subject examines the nature of the primary school environment and introduces preservice teachers to the high school environment. Pre-service teachers will utilize the knowledge and experience that they have gained in the first year of the course including; observation and identification of learner needs, and abilities. Pre-service teachers will undertake 15 days in a primary school setting to observe evaluate, devise, and utilise a range of teaching strategies and resources that benefit primary school children; in particular those in stages 2 and 3. This subject also includes a 5 day introduction to the high school environment.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- Explore the range of resources in primary schools including culturally biased resources which have been modified and used appropriately;
- Develop an awareness of current models of teaching in primary schools with a view to developing their own teaching style;
- Learn appropriate teaching strategies for teaching a range of learners who are at the beginning of the middle years continuum, specifically stages 2 and 3;
- Investigate current multicultural, anti-racism and ESL education policies;
- Engage in critical enquiry and dialogue with subject coordinator, university liaison officer and associate teacher;
- Under the supervision of associate teacher, engage with parents and care givers wherever feasible;
- Examine a range of lesson plans;
- Use information and communication technologies to enhance student learning;
- Develop an understanding of the transition from primary to high school; and,
-Demonstrate knowledge of the Professional Teaching Standards.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Fifteen days of placement in a primary school setting - Five days of placement in a secondary school setting - Education policies and their role in contributing to student outcomes and the equity and quality of school education - Assumptions related to improving teaching and learning - Participate in small-group teaching sessions with primary aged children - Reflect on lesson planning, preparation and implementation - Engage with parents and care givers - Models of lesson planning - Professional Teaching Standards - Information and communication technologies as a resource for teaching - Middle schooling in action - Culturally appropriate resources for teaching - Role of reflective practice in teaching and learning.
