Abstract:
This subject gives students the opportunity to explore the relationship between practical and disciplinary knowledge of teaching. It forms part of the suite of subjects on learning and diversity related to English, Science curriculum and cultural pedagogies. Students are required to successfully complete a professional experience program of up to 25 days (dependant upon accreditation requirements) where they will engage with issues of teaching and learning, planning and assessment. Understanding of curriculum, diverse cultural perspectives and social justice issues will be reflected in the teaching programs undertaken in the school context. Students will address particular dilemmas in teaching through specific collaborative work.

Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have reflected on and addressed evaluations from their previous professional experience programs as a focus in this placement;
- demonstrate their awareness of a range of effective teaching and assessment strategies to cater for the diversity inherent in school populations;
- be able to describe the implications of student diversity focussing on students from Aboriginal and/or NESB backgrounds;
- have critically reflected on their development as a teacher in relation to the Graduate Teacher Standards;
- have successfully completed a professional experience placement of up to 25 days (dependant upon accreditation requirements) that will be assessed using Professional Experience Assessment Profile.
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Linking professional experience expectations and preparation with concurrent academic studies through collaborative problem solving.
- Planning a teaching program using pedagogical and assessment frameworks, such as Quality Teaching, drawing on skills and knowledge of English, Science, culturally diverse learners.
- Review of professional and ethical behaviour.
- Role of assessment in enhancing students' learning.
