Abstract:
This subject introduces students to the primary school environment. The subject offers students an opportunity to explore the roles and relationships within, and structure of, modern primary schools as places of education for children and workplaces for professional teachers and other staff. This professional experience placement (of up to 20 days dependent upon accreditation requirements) provides students with opportunities to develop their knowledge of, and competence in, planning for teaching and learning in the early primary school years.

Assumed Knowledge:
Students attempting this subject should have an understanding of current practices in early years literacy and numeracy teaching in the primary school.
Enrolment restrictions:
Available only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) or as determined by the Course Director.
Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be developing an understanding of transition to school issues relevant to children in the early primary years.
- have successfully completed a professional experience placement of up to 20 days dependent upon accreditation
- have attempted to reflect on their development as a teacher in primary schools with their supervisory teacher and other relevant staff in the setting
- have begun to reflect on the implications of a variety of behaviour management strategies used in early primary years settings
- demonstrate a beginning level of competence in a range of pedagogical, social and administrative skills commensurate with the professional experience setting
- be able to demonstrate an awareness of a range of effective teaching strategies
- have begun to develop their understanding of, and skill in teaching, subject knowledge relevant to the curriculum in the early years of primary school
Syllabus:
The subject will cover the following topics:
- Up to 20 days (dependent upon accreditation requirements) of professional experience
- Classroom management, behaviour management and quality teacher-learner relationships
- Designing and executing effective learning experiences for children in the early years of school
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a Compulsory Workplace Learning component of 15 days duration.
The workplace learning may be up to 20 days, depending on accreditation requirements.
